The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was founded in the 5th century as a trading center, but it soon became one of the most important cities in this part of Europe. During its turbulent history, it used to be a part of Russia, Lithuania and Poland. In the 18th and 19th century Kiev was the main Russian military center. In 1918 a national Ukrainian uprising took place in Kiev, but it failed and the city remained a part of the USSR. After World War II Kiev became an important industrial and scientific center.
From 1991 the city is the capital of the independent Ukrainian state. For the last few years Kiev has also been becoming an important touristic center. The city is well prepared for welcoming the tourists – there is an international airport (Borispol) and three metro lines.
There are plenty of things to do and places to see in this wonderful, green Eastern-European metropolis. You can relax in two botanic gardens and many small parks located all over the city. Kiev is surrounded by wonderful green hills and you will love the numerous small islands on the Dnieper river. To soak in the fantastic atmosphere you can hire a boat and sail down the river.
However, if you prefer active holidays, Kiev offers you a great deal of museums and historical places, as well as a bustling night life. You can enjoy your evenings in the restaurants and pubs in the very center of the city – in the Independence Square and Kreschatik Street. As the center of the city is closed for traffic on weekends and holidays, you will not be disturbed in any way.
If you are keen on knowing the local specialties, Kiev offers you plenty of regional markets where you can buy everything from vegetables to caviar, but also clothes, tools and books. The most famous one is Besarabsky Market. For those interested in history, city guides recommend Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, in which you will find the examples of the traditional Ukrainian architecture located on an area of 1.5 square kilometers.
As a capital, Kiev offers also many possibilities of meeting the Ukrainian culture. There are numerous theaters and museums, philharmonics, a film studio and Kiev Circus. Two of the Kiev’s monuments are listed on the Unesco World heritage sites, namely St. Sophia cathedral and Kiev Pechersk Lavra. You can also admire some impressive monuments, such as the statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the one of Vladimir the Great.
