OLD TOWN APARTMENTS
Ferrara
From 1995 on, UNESCO has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a wonderful example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact. The town planning criteria expressed in Ferrara had a deep influence on the progress of town planning in the following centuries.
Built at the end of the 14th century to protect the city rulers against the frequent popular revolts, the Este Castle has still preserved some of the peculiar characteristics of a medieval fortress like the high angular towers, the steep walls, the surrounding moat passed over by draw-bridges, and the gloomy prisons. lts impressive aspect, however, is linked to happier times, that is the Renaissance Age, when the city became an European capital. At that era the castle hosted the most refined Este court and under its wonderful ceilings resounded the poetical verses of Tasso, together with the music and the madrigals of the most famous musicians.
